My work reflects an ongoing effort to say what I know. In fact, it reflects my ongoing effort to discover what I know by bringing to my worktable my experience, my insight and my questions trusting that meaning/understanding will emerge as I see surfaces, textures and imagery emerge. Weaving, stitching and collage have been potent tools in this process of discovery for over 20 years.
Maps Much of my work is about mapping the interior life of memory, relationship, belief and desire. Using found maps seems to be a logical place to start these explorations, although other imagery and objects also can provide a map of experience--such as science posters and school transcripts.
In earlier work I used stitching and weaving to tell what I knew of the underlying realities of the lives of women who labored over such decorative cloth in the past. I celebrate those lives, even as I recognize that many ended in tragedy.
Isolated images of art work always seem a little lonely to me. Here are installation views of some exhibitions of my work. My thanks to these institutions for supporting work in non-traditional media. Vespine Gallery, Chicago IL 2009
